Cisco was retired from MARE, a therapeutic riding center in Bakersfield, CA in 2002. He was our first rescue.
Cisco was rescued from a hoarding situation in the 1990s by Animal Control and was brought back to health. The MARE organization
adopted him and he served their clients for 5 years before becoming too arthritic to handle the work.
Cisco came to us stressed, fearful and in pain. Dubbed neurotic by his former care-giver, the Rescue Director found Cisco
needed space, time and lots of attention. We changed his diet, placed him in a pasture setting with his own barn stall and
patio, and gave him a mare of his own. Cisco was in heaven.
Over the years his arthritis has been the one difficult issue to control We continue to try different approaches to his
healing and have seen some success. However, Cisco is estimated to be 28 years old. He has spavin, pretty stiff hocks
and often has edema in his hind pastern area. We were able to take him for a short flat ride on his good days which he enjoyed
immensely. He obviously loved being a trail horse in his younger years.
As of October 2007 Cisco was no longer ridden. He was also removed from the herd to prevent further injury. Cisco was
unhappy being on the opposite side of the fence from the herd. Fortunately, with the use of Ester-C we have been able to allow
him back with the herd, and his spirits are much better.
Cisco loves to be brushed and attended as well as taking walks out on the trail. We are looking for someone who would
love to give him that type of attention several days a week on our site.
He is a very kind and gentle horse, trying hard to adjust to his aging body!
